Thomas’s conference opening remarks

Ladies and gentlemen, colleagues, distinguished guests

It is my great pleasure to be with you, here, in China for this important congress.

My sincere thanks to the China Building Material Federation – to its leadership and to their team for the invitation and the collaboration.

As representatives and leaders of the cement and concrete sector,

it is always great to be in a nation that has elevated our material to new heights.

China stands at the forefront of technological innovation and sustainable development, investing boldly in a greener future. From pioneering clean energy projects to advancing digital solutions that drive efficiency across industries, China’s commitment to rapid technological progress and environmental stewardship is evident on the world stage. These achievements not only strengthen China’s position as a global leader, but also offer valuable lessons and inspiration for nations everywhere as we collectively pursue a more sustainable, low-carbon future.

But now, China and the world face new challenges –

YES – to deliver infrastructure, housing, and essential services and amenities that benefit the entire population: clean water, green and efficient transportation, and safe housing.

BUT also to build in a more sustainable way – carbon-free – and vitally, to provide resilience in the face of a changing climate.

Our materials can support this.

It is especially meaningful to be here in China, the country that has pioneered the world’s first operational cement CCS oxyfuel kilns—a remarkable step forward for our industry and for global decarbonisation.

Yet, as significant as these achievements are, they make it clear that the challenge ahead is too great for any one nation or organisation to tackle alone. Collaboration—across borders, sectors, and between public and private spheres—is essential if we are to truly transform our industry and build a more sustainable future for all.

Collaboration is at the heart of all we do.

My own association – the GCCA – was launched in 2018 with just 10 founding member companies.

Now, 7 years on, we have 50 members

– with GCCA companies, large and small, operating in nearly every country.

We are not merely a collection of companies –

we work closely with associations worldwide, like the China Building Material Federation and the China Cement Association,

to align our actions and drive progress together.

It is wonderful to see so many colleagues who work with us here today.

We also engage with many organisations

– whether multilateral bodies such as the United Nations or UNIDO, or our partners across the value chain like architects and engineers who are designing tomorrow’s buildings and infrastructure; or customers like major international companies who are setting their own requirements for low-carbon materials from our sector.

Our industry can take pride in the cooperation and momentum we have generated,

becoming the first global industry to publish a credible roadmap and pathway toward full decarbonisation –

a true milestone for our sector and beyond.

But we did not stop with a roadmap –

we are moving forward swiftly on this journey!

As industry leaders, we are making difficult choices and significant progress.

Every year, we transparently publish an annual ‘action and progress report’ that details the breadth of activity in every company as we strive toward our mission.

Though the journey is long and challenges remain, we can be proud of what we have accomplished so far.

We are seeing tangible improvements across the key levers of our roadmap,

as well as greater engagement from across our sector.

Recently, we have launched an industry Low Carbon Ratings system that enables customers of cement and concrete to assess, compare, and ultimately purchase green cement for the benefit of all.

This was a complex undertaking!

As an industry, we made it possible in partnership with major organisations such as IDDI and the International Energy Agency.

Our sector is brimming with energy, creativity, and resolve.

It is cooperation that truly sets our industry apart, with the GCCA leading the way together with national associations,I truly believe our industry has a promising future –

so long as we succeed in transforming into a net zero industry.

We all understand the vital importance of our material in creating sustainable and resilient communities –

it is both an honour and a responsibility to be stewards of this essential building material.

But this is just one element of the built environment puzzle.

We need innovation in sustainable construction design, effective waste management and circular economy models, cleaner energy and smarter policy –

all working in harmony.

So, I say,

let’s TOGETHER build a positive future

for our industry,

for the built environment,

and for our world.

Thank you very much.
